Laycock's Agricultural Chemists stocks all the major healthcare products for dairy and suckler animals.

Dairy
We are stockists of a wide range of dairy chemicals, udder creams and salves, fly control products, wormers and many other ancillary items.

With ever increasing pressure on milk prices, it may be worth examining your policies on health care within your herd to optimise production levels. Reducing the incidence of lameness, mastitis and any worm burdens could go a long way to increasing animal health and milk yields overall.

Another area where you can increase output is by improving grazing and conservation of forage. Re-seeding old leys with a quality grass mixture will improve both grass yield and quality. Remember, grass is the most cost effective way of feeding cattle and is often under utilised. We stock a wide range of quality grass seed mixtures suitable for most stock rearing systems, a range of silage additives for conservation and Grasstrac, which supplies trace elements throughout the grazing season.

Worm burdens in dairy cattle have been well documented. Recent trial work in America has shown that many adult dairy cows carry a significant level of adult worms throughout their productive life and do not become immune as previously thought. There is an endectocide available in a pour-on form which is effective against all the major parasites in dairy cows and has a zero milk withdrawal period. Other forms of wormers, which are popular with dairy farmers, include boli, especially for first season grazing heifer replacements.

Beef
We stock a wide range of products for this group of livestock from calf milk and de-budding instruments to vaccines and wormers.

There are several ways of worming beef cattle including oral drenching, injection, pour-on applications, bolus and in-feed. All have varying degrees of action and length of persistency against worm species. Withdrawal periods also differ greatly. This may be an important factor to consider, when choosing a worming regime.

In general terms, the life cycle of the major worm species affecting beef cattle in 3 weeks. Most endectocides have a persistent effect for 5-6 weeks against the major worm species so it is possible to use this type of product on a 3,8 + 13 week treatment basis. In other words, 3 applications per grazing season at these specified times should effectively control most parasites. We will be happy to discuss an effective worming regime with you.
